 Darien enjoys a variety of facilities and is conveniently located in DuPage County. Residents have easy access to a number of major roads including interstates 55, 294,290, 355 and have access to PACE, a bus service and the Metro commuter rail. Additionally, the city is only 25 miles from Chicago and boasts easy access to all the attractions of the Windy City.
DuPage County is filled with interesting sites to visit. The DuPage County Historical Museum celebrates the county’s history with changing exhibits and a model of the local railroads. The Cantigny was the home of Col. Robert R. McCormick, editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune. The 500-acre area includes 10 acres of gardens, paths and picnic grounds. The Cosley Zoo is a small facility with domestic and wild animals. Nearby Chicago offers a number of attractions, including museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum of Natural History and the DuSable Museum. The Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier, Sears Tower, Adler Planetarium, John Hancock Center Observatory and Buckingham Fountain provide educational opportunities and entertainment for all ages. Lincoln Park houses the Lincoln Park Zoo with more than 1000 animals from all over the world. Also at Lincoln Park is a four-acre conservatory with gardens and display houses. The theatre district of Chicago boasts the Chicago Theatre, Shubert Theatre, Illinois Theatre Center, Auditorium Theatre and The Second City. Special tours can include the theatre district, or shopping areas such as the Magnificent Mile along Michigan Avenue. Architecture tours take in the variety of building types throughout the city. Charter boats and cruises explore the waterways and some offer riverboat gambling. Chicago is home to a number of professional teams including the Bulls, the Bears, the Blackhawks, the Cubs and the White Socks. For those looking to participate in sports, check out the many golf courses, the lakes and rivers for boating and fishing and the miles of skating and bicycling paths in and around the city. There are hundreds of miles of trials for hiking and horseback riding in the Forest Preserve District. |
